Fortunately, nothing hindered the match scheduled for December 25th. Ihor Arkhypenko’s team entered the game with a squad of 13 field players, while Capitals opted for a larger roster. However, Vadym Shakhraichuk opted for significant rotation among his players, giving two experienced hockey players, Chernenko and Sekirko, the chance to rest.
As the favorites, the hosts started the match more aggressive in the attack. Due to Petlenko’s solid performance, the scoreboard remained balanced. In the 16th minute, the hosts had a two-minute power play opportunity after Cheremnov was penalized. But Capitals were unable to capitalize on this advantage, resulting in a scoreless first period.
However, at the beginning of the second period, Vadym Shakhraichuk’s team managed to take the lead. Captain Karpenko scored the opening goal, his 11th of the season, concluding a successful attack.
Midway through the period, the hosts extended their lead as Kryvonozhkin and Berdniks combined effectively. Andrii made a precise pass through the Kryzhynka defense, allowing Denis to slot the puck into the net.
Although Capitals continued to test Petlenko with their offensive pressure, Mykyta stood strong in goal, deflecting most of the shots directed his way.
Two seconds before the second break, following a foul by Shevchenko, Capitals took an opportunity to score after penalty shot, which was confidently converted by Panchenko for his tenth goal of the season.
In the third period, Makarenko took over in the visitors’ goal, but Danylo was quickly retrieving the puck from his own net after a successful shot from Tyshchenko.
The challenges for Ihor Arkhypenko’s team increased when Ponomarenko was fined twice, allowing Vadym Shakhraichuk’s team to capitalize on the opportunity once. Berdniks showcased his familiar style with a double from long range.
Capitals extended their lead further as Kryvonozhkin added a goal to his two assists with a sharp-angle shot.
Before the end of the match, the hosts utilized another power play, resulting in a second double, courtesy of Panchenko. Yaroslav was close to completing a hat-trick, but was denied by Makarenko during another penalty shot.
With today’s victory, Kyiv Capitals closed the gap to Sokil to just one point. Vadym Shakhraichuk’s team will wrap up 2024 with a game against Dnipro on December 29. Meanwhile, Kryzhynka will resume play in January.
